I probably would have been better off with some lawn gnomes instead.

Came here looking after a ref about the article: "sneaking into the enemy camp to steal their horses," as a way to manage US interests. (The utility of raiding . . . .)
The underwear gnome model actually is a more cogent analysis of the insanity of Afghanistan in the 21st century, however. Maybe we should raid Afghanistan and steal their underwear and plug the oil well leak with them? Might as well get something worthwhile out of it all . . . .
