Gawker Media's io9 blog republished my tongue-in-cheek giant robots in space post. While, of course, the entire scenarios on which science fiction series (especially those involving awesome giant robots) rest are completely implausible, it's sometimes very fun to take the assumptions of a fictional universe and run with them with a bit.
One of the things I wrote about with Crispin Burke in our "Science Fiction and National Security" article was how anachronistic science fiction is: naval battles in space conducted within line-of-sight when most naval strategy today revolves around long-range strike. Moreover, even in World War II naval battles were not conducted within line-of-sight. But in the future, anything's possible.
